Plein Air: Outdoor Oil Painting (Summer)

Capture the essence of place in a landscape painting. Focusing on light, color, and color mixing, you’ll learn to create atmosphere and a sense of distance. Working from life, you’ll gain tools to create vibrant scenes that tell a story. For intermediate to advanced students comfortable with oil paints.

A warm and cool of each of the 3 primary colors: 38ml tubes
These colors are chosen specifically to understand the mixing of colors while painting. They are simplified to maximize the possibilities while gaining a comprehension of color theory. Alan specifically uses Daler-Rowney Georgian oil color for artists (for best color & economy)
Red-  Warm: Cadmium Red Light Hue, Cool: Alizarin Crimson
Yellow- Warm: Cadmium Yellow Deep Hue, Cool: Cadmium Yellow Light Hue

Painting Fundamentals in Acrylic (Summer)

Gain an essential understanding of acrylic paints through the study of still life and photos. In this class, you will explore light, composition, color mixing, and theory. Demonstrations by the instructor will be made prior to each assignment. This class is ideal for beginner to intermediate students.

Watercolor: Details of Nature (Summer)

In this 7-week course will introduce the basics of watercolor painting as we capture the beauty of nature around us. You will learn how to match colors, mix colors, and make educated color choices in your art and life. Both beginners and experienced watercolorists are encouraged to join!

9″ x 12″ watercolor block (must be a block!). One each of hot press and cold press is helpful if you’d like to establish a regular watercolor practice.

Here are some recommended paint colors: cadmium yellow, alizarin crimson, permanent rose, sap green, titanium white, lemon yellow, phthalo or prussian blue, cadmium red, black (or graphite, something dark and neutral), ultramarine violet (highly recommend Schmincke brand for this color), ultramarine blue, burnt umber or van dyke brown. The more colors you have to work with, the better! Bring any and all that you’d like to work with.

Watercolor Fundamentals (Summer)

Learn the basics of watercolor in this beginner course. We will cover the principles of color theory, color mixing, paint layering, and texture through still life, landscapes, wildlife, and more. You will be able to freely express yourself with a new painting every class or take your time with a passion project. Whether you are a practicing artist or would just like to get your feet wet, you’ll leave the class with a new outlook on watercolor painting.

Sketching Outdoors on Campus (Summer)

Explore the outdoors! Join us for a chance to observe and draw outside on the UC Berkeley campus. This workshop will allow students of all abilities to develop their drawing skills, exploring and deepening their experience with materials and drawing the natural environment. Drawing warm-ups and technical strategies will be introduced. This 4 week class is open to all levels.

Sketchbook Drawing & Creative Play (Summer)

Sketch out your ideas, strengthen your personal voice, draw on location, and most importantly– express yourself freely! In this 4 week workshop you will be using traditional drawing media to capture images and emotions, all while fine tuning your drawing skills. Whether you like sketching with pen or pencil, or drawing from life or from memory, this course can offer lessons that will encourage positive creative development. No experience is necessary, all students are welcome!

Subjects discussed will include line quality, shading and gradation, cross hatching, and contour drawing. This class is open to all levels.

This class will help you develop your understanding of proportion, action, line sensitivity, and the illusion of volume. Each class will start with short poses by a nude model (2 -10 min) and transition to longer ones (20 min).

Learn the basics of rendering in colored pencils, pastels, and more, while drawing from life and photographs. We will cover basic color theory, layering, and blending techniques with the drawing media of your choice.
