Independent Study Ceramics
Independent Study is an alternative program for experienced & intermediate ceramics students to receive one-on-one mentorship while developing a body of work. Program participants will enjoy special ceramics demonstrations, peer critique sessions, and learn new approaches to advancing their ceramics goals. Attending this course grants open studio access for 9 weeks.
Program Requirements:
- Attend 3 meetings throughout the duration of the 9 week program, 2 of them in a group setting and a single one-on-one meeting with your instructor (see the dates listed below).
- Participants must be at the intermediate or advanced level.
- Must have taken at least 3 ceramics classes at the Berkeley Art Studio.
- Completed application

There are limited spots available for the program and if your application is approved, you will receive an email from the Art Studio with next steps to register. The first group meeting is to discuss ideas of what you might like to work on, and to set some goals for the session. You can bring past work examples as well as future work inspiration and get collective feedback from the group and instructor to help you flesh out ideas.
The final group meeting is an informal critique to share the work you did over the session and chat about how your goals went. It’s potluck style, usually with tea and treats to celebrate all of the work you all accomplished.
Apart from our three formal meetings, our Wednesday 2-4pm class time works like open office hours. Gianna (Instructor) is there to help and answer any questions and even do impromptu demos. Attendance every week is not required though it's a great time to see what other people in Independent Study are working on and to have a sense of community. Demos can also be scheduled in advance. If more than one person has a technique they would like to see, Gianna will let everyone know when the demo is happening so that they can join as well if they are interested in seeing it.
