Sketchbook Drawing & Creative Play

Sketch out your ideas, strengthen your personal voice, draw on location, and most importantly– express yourself freely! In this 4 week workshop you will be using traditional drawing media to capture images and emotions, all while fine tuning your drawing skills. Whether you like sketching with pen or pencil, or drawing from life or from memory, this course can offer lessons that will encourage positive creative development. No experience is necessary, all students are welcome!

Materials: 
Sketchbook of any size and shape
Drawing Materials:  Micron Pens, Brush Pens, Fountain Pens, Pencils, Color Pencils, eraser, Sharpener. 
Optional: India Ink with a watercolor brush size 6, Pan Set of Watercolors, Markers.

Painting Fundamentals in Oil

Conquer your oil-painting fears and create paintings that you will love! During this class you’ll learn how to mix colors, create abstract and realistic images, combine painting and drawing, and build a painting from start to finish. This class is geared towards beginning and intermediate students; all levels are welcome.

Materials List:
A warm and cool of each of the 3 primary colors: 38ml tubes
These colors are chosen specifically to understand the mixing of colors while painting. They are simplified to maximize the possibilities while gaining a comprehension of color theory. Alan specifically uses Daler-Rowney Georgian oil color for artists (for best color & economy)
Red-  Warm: Cadmium Red Light Hue, Cool: Alizarin Crimson
Yellow- Warm: Cadmium Yellow Deep Hue, Cool: Cadmium Yellow Light Hue
Blue- Warm: Coeruleum Blue Hue, Cool: French Ultramarine Blue
Titanium White
Additional paint: primarily for under-painting and a foundation of light: Acrylic – Transperant Raw Sienna (2 oz)
Refined Linseed Oil
Thinner – Neutral Thin by Eco House

Basics of Sewing, Mending, and Alterations(Late Fall)

In this 7 week class you will review basic hand sewing and garment construction (and deconstruction) techniques through a combination of lecture, demonstrations, hands-on activities. By the end of this class students will learn basic hand sewing techniques for mending, alterations and garment customization. These skills will help you extend the life of your favorite garments, alter them to fit better, or customize/repurpose items according to your own design.

Pen & Ink Illustration

Learn the tricks and techniques of Pen & Ink! We’ll explore the in’s and out’s of working with pen and applying it effectively with brush and inks. Subjects will range from still life to working from photos. Topics such as loose sketching, contrast, texturing, hatching techniques, composition, and illustration will be covered. All skill levels welcome.

Begin your drawing practice in graphite! The most common tool for drawing, the graphite pencil, will be the defined medium of this 7 week course. Learn the basics of sketching, understand the effectiveness of drawing techniques, and receive a formal introduction into the process of creating imagery all on your own. Subjects discussed will include line quality, shading and gradation, cross hatching, and contour drawing.  This class is open to all levels.

Drawing Nature Landscapes

Join us for an in-depth approach to the basics of sketching lines and developing style with an emphasis on landscapes. This class is perfect for those interested in starting a regular drawing practice or expanding drawing skills. Explore formal sketching and drawing demonstrations that cover a variety of subjects. We’ll focus on perspective drawing, proportions, nature scenes, and more. This class is open to all drawing levels.

Introduction to Procreate: iPad Drawing – Winter

Learn to use Procreate to take a whole new approach to digital drawing and painting, and learn to create the digital illustrations you’ve always wanted to make. Whether you’re new to digital art or curious about Procreate, you’ll gain an arsenal of techniques, tricks and tools you can use to start creating right away. Key lessons include:

Getting set up with sketching
Using brushes, erasers, and masks
Creating and organizing layers
Adding color, texture, and final details

Graphic Design Fundamentals: Illustrator Focus

Learn how to create beautiful vector graphics in Adobe Illustrator, an essential tool for both graphic designers and digital artists. Use Illustrator’s drawing tools to bring your creativity to life, and work with shapes, text, color, patterns, and textures. In this class you’ll create logos, icons, and posters. You’ll also learn how to translate your designs for web, social media, packaging, or print.

Required materials:
Adobe Illustrator Software

We have 4 desktop computers in our lab with the Adobe Suite downloaded. These computers are reserved for community members, but if you want to work on your own laptop you must purchase the software.

Animal Sculpture

Do you love animals? Do you have a beloved pet? In this seven week course, you will develop your sculpting skills while gaining an understanding of your favorite animal’s anatomy. Projects will include sgraffito (scratching into the clay surface) and building three-dimensionally. If you are interested in learning more about sculpture and the animal figure, this is the class for you.

Clay must be purchased at the Studio. Clay is $10-$17 for a 25 lb bag depending on clay body. We also sell tools kits at the Studio and the prices range from $10-$18. Class includes unlimited glazes, firings, and open studio access.

Beginning Pottery

Dive into clay with our introductory pottery class! Learn the ins and outs of throwing one-of-a-kind ceramics pieces and explore the basics of finishing and glazing your work. No previous experience with clay is necessary.

Clay must be purchased at the Studio. Clay is $10-$17 for a 25 lb bag depending on clay body. We also sell tools kits at the Studio and the prices range from $10-$18. Class includes unlimited glazes, firings, and open studio access.
