In this course we will explore the intuitive expression of watercolor painting. This workshop will offer a formal demonstration into this practice, yet encourage the unpredictable qualities watercolor painting can exhibit. This 7-week course will introduce the basics of watercolor painting as we capture the beauty of natural landscapes. You will gain first hand experience in color mixing & matching, brush technique & control, and expressive color contrast. If you are looking to jumpstart your creativity or explore a new technique, this workshop is for you. All levels are welcome.

Portrait Painting in Oil (Late Fall)

Develop your observation skills and learn how to paint from photos and live models in our portrait painting class. This class will help you develop your understanding of facial proportion, tonal values, and boost your painting confidence. This course is geared towards intermediate students.

Materials List:
A warm and cool of each of the 3 primary colors: 38ml tubes
These colors are chosen specifically to understand the mixing of colors while painting. They are simplified to maximize the possibilities while gaining a comprehension of color theory. Alan specifically uses Daler-Rowney Georgian oil color for artists (for best color & economy)
Red-  Warm: Cadmium Red Light Hue, Cool: Alizarin Crimson
Yellow- Warm: Cadmium Yellow Deep Hue, Cool: Cadmium Yellow Light Hue

Nature in Pen & Ink (Late Fall)

During this 7 week course students will gain an appreciation for the natural world while learning the basics of the pen and ink drawing medium. Topics discussed will include pen textures, hatching and cross hatching, inventive line quality, gradation in ink, and expression in individual style. By the end of the class, students will feel comfortable in their ability to draw flora, fauna and confident in drawing anything under the sun.

Drawing in Color (Late Fall)

Take the next step in your creative practice and learn the basics of color pencil drawing. In this course let color take your drawings to new and exciting heights. This course will teach you the basic color theory, introduce color harmony, interesting techniques, and improve your skill at sketching and drawing. Some drawing experience is encouraged but not required.

Landscape Drawing Workshop (Early Fall)

Explore the outdoors! Join us for a chance to observe and draw outside at the UC Berkeley Eucalyptus Grove. This workshop will allow students of all abilities to develop their drawing skills, exploring and deepening their experience with materials and drawing the natural environment. Drawing warm-ups and technical strategies will be introduced. Students will have the opportunity to work towards one finished drawing. There are fascinating, shapes, patterns, and texture to be discovered in nature. This workshop is open to all levels.

Watercolor Workshop: Details of Nature

In this 4-week course will introduce the basics of watercolor painting as we capture the beauty of nature around us. You will learn how to match colors, mix colors, and make educated color choices in your art and life. Both beginners and experienced watercolorists are encouraged to join!

Materials List:
9″ x 12″ watercolor block (must be a block!). One each of hot press and cold press is helpful if you’d like to establish a regular watercolor practice.
Paintbrushes: size 2 round, size 4 round (or similar)
Cup for paint water
Paper towels
Pencil
Kneaded eraser
Artist’s tape
Here are some recommended paint colors: cadmium yellow, alizarin crimson, permanent rose, sap green, titanium white, lemon yellow, phthalo or prussian blue, cadmium red, black (or graphite, something dark and neutral), ultramarine violet (highly recommend Schmincke brand for this color), ultramarine blue, burnt umber or van dyke brown. The more colors you have to work with, the better! Bring any and all that you’d like to work with.
