Surface Techniques – Intermediate

Create your forms on the potter’s wheel, then finish your pieces using unique decorative techniques! You will learn how to use slip to decorate greenware and create texture with tools, stamps, and other surface carving techniques. We’ll also experiment with glazes and explore a variety of ways to use them. This class is perfect for intermediate students interested in learning more about surface design.

Pre-requisite: Must be able to throw a cylinder confidently and with even walls.

Hand Building & Surface Explorations (Late Fall)

Take a break from the potter’s wheel and learn the ins and outs of handbuilding with clay! During this class, you will learn slab and coil building methods and slip and glaze finishing techniques will be addressed. This class is perfect for all levels.

Thrown & Altered – Intermediate (Early Fall)

Combine wheel throwing and hand built construction to produce forms of irregular shape and texture. You’ll learn to throw large pieces in sections and discover various methods for texturing surfaces. You’ll also alter forms using techniques such as faceting and fluting. If you’re an intermediate student ready to challenge yourself by learning some new techniques, then this is the class for you.

Ceramics Focus: Drinking Vessels – Intermediate

Learn to make a wide variety of drinking vessels used all over the world. Whiskey jugs, beer steins, goblets, tea bowls, tumblers and flasks will all be covered in this class. Develop your skills in throwing taller and larger forms and experiment with more complicated handles and forms. Open to all intermediate level students.

Intermediate Pottery (Early Fall)

In this class, you will improve your techniques so you can make larger, lighter and well-balanced pieces. We’ll also explore the complex relationship between form and function, as well as the importance of trimming and finishing. Glaze application and alternative finishes will be covered in more depth in these classes. Intermediate Pottery is a general skill building class for all-around improvement.

Handbuilding Tea Party

Learn to make everything you’ll need for a tea party! We’ll learn to make teapots, teacups, tea trays, sugar jars, creamers, and more. We’ll use handbuilt construction—slabs, pinch pots, coil techniques—to create beautiful functional objects. All levels are welcome.
