Drawing Fundamentals – Summer

Begin your formal creative practice in the traditional method of charcoal drawing. Charcoal pencils and sticks are one of most commonly used tools to draw with. Learn the basics of this fine medium, understand the effectiveness of drawing techniques, and get a formal introduction into the process of creating imagery all on your own. Subjects discussed will include line quality, shading and gradation, cross hatching, and contour drawing. This class is open to all levels.

  • Strathmore 400 Series Recycled Paper Drawing Pad (18×24)
  • Vine Charcoal (Soft)
  • compressed charcoal sticks (Charkoal)
  • Charcoal pencils (2b, 4b, 6b)
  • White charcoal pencil
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Drawing board (18×24)

Mixed Media Drawing – Summer

Expand your drawing practice into the world of mixed media. In this fun, engaging class you will explore various drawing and painting materials and learn to blend, layer, and create depth with your artwork. You will learn how to design as well as draw unique and interesting compositions through a variety of methods. This class is open to all levels.

 

Materials List:

Hot press Watercolor paper (11”x15”)
Vellum or tracing Paper (11”x15”)
Tombow Graphite Pencils HB – 8b
Clear Tombow Dual Brush pen
Paper Blending Stumps
Fine tip eraser (Julian recommends large and small mechanical eraser pens)
Sumi ink (4oz.) & table salt.
Mid sized brushes – detail, round, flat (the more you have the more options for you)
Sandpaper sharpening block
Artist Tape
Favorite magazines for collage and image transfers.

Optional Materials:

lino block

Lino Block Printing – Summer

In this course we will cover woodblock printmaking through 3 different styles: one & two color pattern based design, perspective driven design and a final project merging both that also incorporates text. An edition of each project will be printed and different inking methods will be explored. Depict images from your life and stories you want to tell! This class is open to all levels.

Required Materials from Students:

  • Linoleum Cutters – Either Speedball, Flexcut, or Kasoyo
  • Linoleum Blocks (Any size up to 12″ wide) – Options at Blick
  • Akua intaglio ink or block printing ink (water soluble only) – 1 Black, and 1 Color of your choice
  • Paper
  • Drawing pencils
  • Blue ballpoint pen
  • Eraser
  • Masking tape

Art Studio Supplies:

  • Paper (Available for purchase)
  • Brayers & rollers, stands, carbon transfer paper provided in class

Figure Drawing – Summer

Develop your observation skills and learn how to draw from a live model in our figure drawing class. This class will help you develop your understanding of proportion, action, line sensitivity, and the illusion of volume. Each class will start with short poses by a nude model (2 -10 min) and transition to longer ones (20 min).

Cityscape Drawing – Spring

Capture the essence of place in a cityscape drawing. This course focuses on drawing environmental objects first, people, cars, motorcycles, then moves into broader environments. Students will learn light theory, atmospheric perspective, single and two point perspective and how to construct environments. Working from life and photographs, you’ll gain tools to create vibrant scenes that tell a story. This class is open to all levels.

Digital Arts: iPad Drawing – Spring

Learn to use your iPad to take a whole new approach to digital drawing and painting, and learn to create the digital illustrations you’ve always wanted to make. Whether you’re new to digital art or curious about the app Procreate, you’ll gain an arsenal of techniques, tricks and tools for print production you can use to start creating right away. Special emphasis to color palettes and files fidelity management with Adobe Photoshop. Key lessons include:

  • Getting set up with sketching
  • Using brushes, erasers, and masks
  • Creating and organizing layers
  • Managing files and getting them ready for print and production
  • Adding color, texture, and final details
