Screen Printing Weekend Workshop

Discover the fun and flexible medium of screen printing! In this 2-day Saturday workshop, you will learn how to turn your designs into stencils, experiment with layering and aligning, and how to reclaim and reuse screens. This class is open to everyone! Beginners will learn the fundamentals, while more experienced printmakers will have time to print and learn more advanced tricks.
Required Materials List:
Water-based Screen Printing Ink for FABRIC:

Colors: Black (8oz), White (8oz), and 1 contrasting color 8oz (red, blue, green, etc)

Brand: Choose either Speedball Fabric Screen Printing Inks OR Jacquard Versatex Screen Printing Inks. (Purchase at Blick or Michaels art stores in-person or online)
Printing Paper (required), T-shirt(s) (optional)

Day 1: Watercolor/Multipurpose Paper (required): Recommended brand: Canson XL Watercolor Pad - 9" x 12", Euro Fold, 30 Sheets

Day 2: T-shirts (optional): Bring 2-3 t-shirts for prints.
Additional Materials:

Containers: Bring 2 or 3 small/medium-sized containers with lids for mixing and storing ink (e.g., small jam jars, yogurt containers).

One piece of Foam Board or MatBoard: 16 x 20 inches (Product link)

Painters tape: Blue tape 1/2 inch width

Clean up: kitchen sponge, old towel, and casual clothes you don’t mind getting ink on.
Optional Materials (not required):

Rough Artwork: Digital or hand-drawn Image (black-and-white line-art only):

Bring a hard copy printout and a JPEG or PNG file (10 inches tall x 8 inches wide, 150-300 ppi resolution) on a thumb drive or in cloud storage for printing onto transparencies at the studio. (Further directions provided by the instructor.)

Laptop with photo editing software (e.g. Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva, etc.)

Prepared artwork on transparency (e.g. halftone photograph or black line drawing). Further directions/guidelines will be provided by the instructor.
Provided in the class:

One 18 x 24 inch 160 mesh screen *

Tag board paper, 9 x 12 inch, up to 50 sheets (for test prints)

1 sheet of 18 x 24 inch transparent mylar

Mixing spatula and spoons

Tape, scissors
You may purchase printable transparencies, paint pens, and additional ink (primary colors only) at the front desk of the Art Studio. You can find more screen printing tools, ink colors, watercolor and other fine art papers at Blick Art Materials (Berkeley, Oakland).
* If you wish to purchase your screen after the class you can purchase this from the front desk staff. Cost will be provided on day of the class.
