This class introduces Chinese calligraphy 書法 shūfǎ, the art of writing, as textual communication, visual aesthetic, and embodied practice. After a brief overview of historical context, aesthetic principles, and materials, the course will mainly consist of hands-on demonstration and practice. Subsequent sessions will build up students’ skills and mastery of the forms and structures to create calligraphy that exhibits good balance and energy, culminating in the writing of individual characters, student names, and poetry. No knowledge of Chinese is necessary and beginners are welcome.

Materials List:
- Materials Fee: $25 (payable to the instructor directly). The instructor will provide materials for first week of class (brush, felt paper, ink)
- Students can purchase additional paper, brushes, ink and other calligraphy materials at Oakland Chinese Bookstore (388 9th Street 102, Oakland CA 94607) as well as paper from the instructor and studio during the class term. Materials are also available for purchase at BLICK and Inkstone.
