Classes

Photographing Friends and Family: The people closest to us can be the most compelling, but challenging, subjects to photograph. They are often readily available, but can be stiff and uncomfortable in front of the camera. This course will look thoroughly at photographers that photographed their own close friends and families in interesting and diverse ways, including Elinor Carucci, Larry Sultan, Ryan Mcginley, Tina Barney, Nan Goldin, and Sally Mann, among others. We will also discuss the complicated ethics of the photographer in "exposing" the intimate moments of their close ones to the outside world. The class will split its time between photographic lectures/group discussions, critique, and visiting artists. All photographing will be done outside of class. Students should feel free to work in either film of digital. This class welcomes those who would like to make traditional family portraits as well as those who aim to create more extensive bodies of work - the more varied approaches, the better!

Learning to Photograph with Digital Cameras: The idea of this class is to teach every student the basics of photography in a digital context.  Students will gain a basic understanding of how the camera works and what creative tools are available within the camera to achieve different results.  We will also go into issues of uploading, downloading and resizing images, resolution, and related topics. In addition we will discuss creative aspects of photography such as composition, lighting, approach to subjects, portraiture, landscape, and action images, among other topics.  This schedule is flexible and subject to change depending on the needs and desires of the class.

**How to Make a Great Photo Book: Whether you are constructing a book on Blurb from a recent family vacation or creating an artist publication for submission to a publisher, sequencing your pictures in a dynamic way is crucial to the success of any photo based publication. In this class, students will learn about project development, the basics of sequencing pictures together and how to use online publishing resources. Classes will be structured as part lecture, part in-class demonstration, and part discussion/critique. Students are allowed to work on as many books as they want during the course of the class. This is a new class to the ASUC art studio and we are looking forward to seeing all of the great pictures printed at the studio organized into great publications!
