Printing from Color Negatives: With the rise of digital imaging technologies, color darkroom photography has become  an increasingly antiquated process. The ASUC Art Studio is home to one of the only remaining public-access color darkrooms in the East Bay. Come take advantage of this rare opportunity to learn how to properly expose, color-balance, and process color prints with our 31” Kreonite RA-4 Processor.  Prior darkroom experience strongly recommended
Bring to first class: processed color negatives and color photographic enlarging paper.

Experiments in Lighting: Photography is a medium of light. The key to making beautiful professional looking photographs is learning how to control light. In this course we will focus on shooting!  Students will learn how to use everyday light sources to create beautiful lighting effects and will also gain experience with professional studio lighting systems.  Because we want to move through as many different lighting scenarios as possible we will not spend time printing. Instead, the class will be collectively building an online blog that we will fill with images of our lighting experiments, thoughts and ideas.  This will be a great class for students who want to learn more about the dynamic properties of light and become a more intentional and skillful shooter. Students are expected to have their own digital SLR camera with manual functions and a hot shoe connection for an external flash (or a PC external flash connection) and should be able to spend a couple hours per week outside of class to work on assignments in the studio and/or at home. Blog link and class assignments can be found at http://experimentsinlighting.blogspot.com/

Learning to Photograph with Digital Cameras: The idea of this class is to teach every student the basics of photography in a digital context.  Students will gain a basic understanding of how the camera works and what creative tools are available within the camera to achieve different results.  We will also go into issues of uploading, downloading and resizing images, resolution, and related topics. In addition we will discuss creative aspects of photography such as composition, lighting, approach to subjects, portraiture, landscape, and action images, among other topics.  This schedule is flexible and subject to change depending on the needs and desires of the class.
